At the beginning of the 19th century "One Inch Button Badges" were produced as low-priced alternatives to the expensive medallions in the USA. The invention of celluloid in 1869 by John Wesley Hyatt brought the world the first semi-synthetical plastic. Buttons turned to an essantial fashinable accessory with the beginning of The Sex Pistols and of course of Punk Music.
In the following ten years the world showed their faith to a band, music genre or youth culture just by wearing a button. In the meantime "One Inch Button Badges" lost some of their popularity, but of course they're still here and still in vogue.
