Background information on pencil skirts:
The precursor of the pencil skirt as we now know it, made its first brief appearance on the fashion scene in 1880 as a so-called hobble skirt. In 1910, French designer Paul Poiret transformed this into a tight tube skirt suitable for respectable society. Yet it should take another 30+ years, until 1947, for Christian Dior to turn this shape into the seminal pencil skirt. He designed a shorter version of the hobble skirt with a brand new, groundbreaking silhouette: the H-line. The star of this novel shape was the pencil skirt, soon popular in offices around the Western world. The perfect pencil skirt is tight and figure-hugging at the hip, then continues to narrow down towards the calves - just like a pencil. It's the optimal shape for flattering nicely rounded hips and a narrow waist. The hem stops at the knee or just above/below it. Due to the slim cut, a slit is essential for more natural movement. Pencil skirts are traditionally paired with heels and nylons. They are the ultimate feminine statement: The erotic allure of the innocent hemline combined with towering heels will make any man weak at the knees.
